German Unity Day

Today, Germany celebrates The Day of German Unity. It remembers when the Federal Republic of Germany and the Democratic Republic of Germany united to create one single, federal Germany on October 3, 1990. It is the only national holiday established at the federal level. All other holidays are regulated exclusively by the states.

Fifth Research Papers Competition for Junior Scientists who work on comparative Russian-European studies

The organizers, Centre for German and European Studies (St. Petersburg State University—Bielefeld University), supported by DAAD, and Council of Young Scientists of the Faculty of Sociology, St. Petersburg State University invite papers by Europe-based MA and Ph.D. students in social sciences or humanities, working on issues topical for Russia or comparing Russian and European cases.

Prize: Grant of up to 1275 EUR for a research trip to Russia.

Research trip to Lithuania

Young scientists conducting research on Europe are regularly supported by the Centre for German and European Studies. This spring, Anastasia Golovneva, affiliated researcher of the CGES, participant of our research project “Co-evolution of Knowledge and Communication Networks: Structural Dynamics of Creative Collectives in European Cultural Capitals”, and PhD student of the University of Amsterdam, received a travel-grant for a research trip to Lithuania.

Funding for Russian academics

Centre for German and European studies (St. Petersburg State University — Bielefeld University) continuously supports Russian academics who conduct research in the field of European studies. In early 2018, Nikolay Vlasov, associate professor at the Department of Theory and History of International Relations at St. Petersburg State University, was funded by the CGES to conduct a research trip to the Secret State Archives Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, Berlin, to work on research concerning the personality of Alfred von Waldersee - one of the most influential people of late 19th century Germany.
