CGES general mission consists in bringing together Russian, German and European scholars to spread the highest standards and best practices of academic work, to promote high-quality education and perform edge-cutting comparative interdisciplinary research. In accordance with its general mission, the Сentre’s tasks include coordinating collaborative international research projects, developing transnational scientific dialogue and promoting international education programs.

CGES conducts research activities within perspective areas of the interdisciplinary international field of European studies encouraging academic networking, integrating research and education and supporting follow-up as well as public implementation practices. These principles, based on recommendations of the CGES Evaluation Report of 2007 and the CGES Application for 2009-2013, underpin the overall CGES activity, which has been positively evaluated in the second interim of 2011 as well as third interim of 2013.

Involvement of junior Russian and European scholars into international research activities is one of the key objectives for CGES promoting German and European studies in Russia, increasing scientific capability of CGES and providing sustainability of the studies run by the Centre.

CGES academic activity is based on the following principles

  • Focused research. CGES runs and supports projects, which correspond its mission and key research areas. Large-scale projects involving Russian and European scholars and bringing in external funding are supplemented with additional small-scale and pilot projects.
  • Networking. Conducting academic activities such as international conferences, workshops and seminars CGES maintains ties with different faculties, universities, research groups and institutions in Russia (St. Petersburg in particular), Germany and Europe. It allows to involve leading scholars in the projects run by CGES.
  • Complex approach. CGES provides thematic coherence and continuity of all academic activities including fundamental and practical research, internships, workshops and conferences, as well as publication of scientific papers.
  • Educational impact. CGES research involves PhD students and academically-oriented MA students, bringing together academic training and research activities. Leading researchers join teaching activities, participate in academic events, as well as supervise PhD and MA students.
  • Outreach and practical application. CGES research deal with issues of broad social importance and, where applicable, policy relevance.

The CGES research activities are run within four main research areas
